In terms of hardware sold, Symbian is market leader of all smartphone operating systems. It runs on a large number of devices, mainly from Nokia.

Especially the organizer features of Symbian phones made them attractive to business consumers in the past. Symbian/Nokia also offered an AppStore many years, before Apple did. Nowadays, Nokia faces with Symbian major challenges in competing with Apple and Android – especially in terms of usability and attracting a large developer community.

One step to achieve this goal was to put Symbian completely open source in the beginning of 2010. But even with this step, the platform is rather complex and there are only a limited number of real Symbian experts out there.
